Staff Appreciation Day 2025
December 12, 2025, is designated as the University’s Staff Appreciation Day. As in the past years, the Committee on Positive Workplace and Staff Development (PWSD) will sponsor a small thankful gift for all full-time colleagues. The gifts will be distributed to colleagues via their reporting departments/ units in early December. The thankful gift this year is a compact wooden massage board designed for health care and wellness promotion.
“Relax, recharge and refresh. Wellness starts with a gentle press!”
In our everyday life, we should invest our time in work as well as physical wellness. A professional team from our School of Chinese Medicine has provided practical tips on the best use of this tool in acupuncture points massage to rejuvenate your body and revitalize your energy.
Special thanks to Professor Wang Qian, Ms. Hung Hing Yu Ada and their team from the School of Chinese Medicine for the live demonstration on acupuncture points massage, which address various types of work-related or daily health issues, bringing wellness and care into our daily life:
Back Meridian Soothing Technique
Efficacy and Indications:This technique helps to unblock the meridians along the back, promoting overall wellness. It is suitable for individuals who sit for prolonged periods, experience stiffness in the shoulders and back, or have poor circulation of qi and blood.
Procedure: Use the back side of a massage board or the comb-like edge to gently scrape along both sides of the spine from top to bottom until the skin becomes slightly red. Perform this 1–2 times daily.
Qi and Blood Activation Technique for Lower Limb
Efficacy and Indications: This method targets heaviness in the legs, poor circulation of qi and blood, and is suitable for individuals who sit or stand for prolonged periods. It promotes healthy circulation in the lower limbs and helps prevent varicose veins and venous thrombosis caused by extended sitting or standing.
Procedure:
1. Use the comb-like edge of a massage board to gently scrape downward along the outer side of the calf to the ankle until the skin becomes slightly red. Perform this 1–2 times daily.
2. Massage key acupoints on the foot.
Acupoint: Zusanli (ST36)
Simple Location: Place four horizontal fingers below the outer knee (lateral patella), then move one finger-width laterally from the Tibia.
Unblocking Head Meridian Technique
Efficacy: This technique helps to unblock the meridians of the head, revitalizing the mind and calming the spirit. It enhances concentration, improves sleep quality, and is especially beneficial for individuals engaged in intense mental work.
Procedure: Use the comb-like edge of a massage board to evenly comb the entire scalp from the front hairline to the back hairline. Perform 30–50 times per session, once in the morning and once in the evening.
Neck and Shoulder Meridian Relief Technique
Efficacy: This technique targets meridians and acupoints in the neck and shoulder area to unblock energy pathways and relieve pain.
1. Use the back side or comb-like edge of a massage board to stroke downward from one side of the neck to the shoulder, covering the entire neck-shoulder region. Continue until the skin becomes slightly red. Perform 1–2 times daily.
2. Gently knead and press the acupoints in the neck and shoulder area. Pressure should be moderate—just enough to produce a mild soreness or fullness sensation. Perform 1–2 times daily, for 3–5 minutes each session.
Acupoint: Fengchi (GB20) Simple Location: Located in the depression just inside the hairline, below the occipital bone.
Headache Relief Technique
Efficacy: This method stimulates key acupoints on the head to unblock meridians and relieve pain.
Procedure: Use the rounded end of a massage board to gently press and knead the acupoints. Pressure should be moderate—just enough to produce a mild soreness or fullness sensation. Massage each acupoint for about 30 seconds. Perform this technique 1–2 times daily, for 3–5 minutes each session.
Acupoint: Taiyang (EX-HN5) Simple Location: Located in the slight depression between the outer end of the eyebrow and the corner of the eye.
Acupoint: Baihui (GV20)Simple Location: Located at the very top center of the head.
Eye Wellness Technique
Efficacy: Stimulates acupoints around the eyes to relieve eye fatigue and promote eye health and clarity.
1. Use the finer end of a massage board to gently press and stroke from the inner brow to the outer brow. Apply the same method along the lower eye socket, stroking from the inner to the outer corner of the eye. Perform 10–20 strokes per session, 1–2 times daily.
2. Gently knead and press acupoints around the eyes. Pressure should be moderate—just enough to produce a mild soreness or fullness sensation. Perform 1–2 times daily, for 3–5 minutes each session.
Cuanzhu (BL2)
Simple Location: Located in the depression at the inner end of the eyebrow.
Yuyao (EX-HN4)

Ten-Finger Meridian Activation Technique
Efficacy: Stimulates the meridians in the fingers to promote circulation of qi and blood to the extremities.
1. Use the forked end of a massage board to gently clamp both sides of each finger and press-stroke from the base to the tip. Repeat 5–10 times per finger, 1–2 times daily.
2. Apply targeted pressure to specific acupoints on the fingers to address related internal organ issues. For example, acupoints on the thumb can help relieve sore throat and pharyngitis.
